Men and the symptons of burnout

In Consultation, Exercise, Information by Katie Evans

What men are told to do, push on through

Heavy grey numbness can just follow you around.  No complaining, no seeking help, just bury your head and work harder.

“Tired but can’t sleep, find no joy or motivation, disconnected from my family”. Common patterns I hear daily in my clinic.

The signs men ignore (until they can’t)

Burnout doesn’t usually look like lying on the floor saying “I’m burnt out.”

For most men, it looks like getting on with it.

Working longer hours.

Being more irritable.

Drinking more coffee (or alcohol).

Sleeping badly.

And telling yourself you’ll deal with it later.

The problem? Later often comes as exhaustion, injury, anxiety, or complete shutdown.

What burnout looks like in men

Burnout in men often shows up physically and behaviourally before emotionally.

You might notice:

  • Constant fatigue, even after rest
  • Tight shoulders, neck, jaw, or lower back pain
  • Loss of motivation for things you used to enjoy
  • Short temper or emotional numbness
  • Brain fog, poor focus, forgetfulness
  • Sleep issues or waking up already tired
  • Training harder but recovering worse

Many men don’t recognise this as burnout — they call it stress, being busy, or just life.

Why Men Ignore the Signs

Most men aren’t taught to monitor how they feel — they’re taught to function.

Common reasons men push through burnout:

  • “Other people have it worse”
  • “I don’t have time to slow down”
  • “I’ll rest once this busy period is over”
  • “Pain and fatigue are normal”
  • “I just need to be tougher”

There’s also a strong identity tie to being reliable, productive, and capable.

Admitting you’re struggling can feel like failure — even when it isn’t.

But burnout doesn’t care how capable you are. It builds quietly until your body forces the conversation.

The Cost of Ignoring Burnout

Unchecked burnout often leads to:

  • Chronic pain or recurring injuries
  • Hormonal and sleep disruption
  • Reduced performance at work or in sport
  • Emotional withdrawal from partners and family
  • Anxiety, low mood, or loss of confidence

The longer it’s ignored, the longer recovery takes.

Why Maintenance Matters (Before Breakdown)

Most men understand maintenance when it comes to cars, tools, or training.

You don’t wait for an engine to seize before changing the oil.

You don’t train hard without recovery and expect progress.

Your body and nervous system work the same way.

Burnout isn’t weakness — it’s overuse without recovery.

How The Maintenance Box Helps

The Maintenance Box is designed for men who don’t want therapy-speak — they want practical care that works.

It supports burnout recovery by:

  • Releasing chronic muscle tension that keeps the body in stress mode
  • Improving circulation and nervous system regulation
  • Reducing pain that adds to mental load
  • Giving your system permission to slow down — safely
  • Creating a regular reset instead of waiting for crisis

Regular maintenance helps:

  • Better sleep
  • Faster recovery from training or work stress
  • Clearer thinking
  • Reduced irritability and tension
  • More consistent energy

It’s not about stopping — it’s about functioning better for longer.

Burnout Isn’t a Personal Failure

If this sounds familiar, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

It means you’ve been running without enough recovery.

The strongest thing you can do isn’t pushing harder — it’s maintaining what you’ve already built.

Because everything works better when it’s looked after — including you
